ECCE 2024 – Contributing to a sustainable and participatory future
Paris, 8-11 October 2024
The European Conference on Cognitive Ergonomics (ECCE) was established in 1982, and is the leading conference in human-media interaction and cognitive ergonomics. ECCE is the annual conference of EACE, European Association of Cognitive Ergonomics. It aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from different disciplines to share progress, ideas and to debate.
As a leading city in the domains of ecological transition and citizen participation, we are happy to welcome you in Paris, for a convivial and scientifically thriving event around our special theme: Contributing to a sustainable and participatory future.

Multiple ongoing crises spurs us to reflect on how to support and achieve energy, ecological and social transitions, in all areas of life: work, education, housing, leisure, etc. By understanding social, technological, emotional, ethical, and cognitive factors of those transitions, we may be able to design appropriate supportive services and devices. Concomitantly, there is a renewed interest in participatory practices at different levels (local, territorial, national…) sparked by an explicit demand by citizens and workers to be more involved in defining and designing their living and working environments. These two topics are intertwined: proper participatory processes are a key factor to support the transition processes toward a sustainable world.
ECCE 2024 will focus on these issues, through interaction around concepts, methods and technologies that can support transitions. The following questions will be addressed specifically:
• How digital technologies can support transition toward sustainability in work and life situations?
• Which participatory approaches can support sustainable energy, ecological, and social transitions? At what scale?
• Can HCI developments nourish human/non-human or human/environment interactions?
• How frugality, low-tech and low-key concepts and approaches may be integrated and transform design processes of technologies, work and living conditions?

In addition, the conference will tackle classical issues in cognitive ergonomics, ergonomics and human-computer interaction.
